AmD first came into existence in 1987 when owner Geoff Everett decided that his previous tuning business, the Car Clinic, was in desperate need of a rolling road. Unable to accommodate a rolling road test cell at his premises in Thatcham, Berks (the workshop itself was not much bigger than our current rolling road test cell), new premises had to be found.

A typical village garage in the idyllic rural location of Oddington, Oxfordshire, was to be the new home for the next 15 years, and when the company moved there in January 1987, the business name was changed to Automotive Developments to reflect the more 'hi-tech' nature of the business. Whilst still trading under this name to this day, the nickname 'AmD' has also been adopted. This was created not by Geoff but by his customers and suppliers, who often shortened the name to 'AmD' for ease of use. This nickname stuck, and has since been adopted as the company logo.

It was whilst as Oddington that Geoff met racing driver Mike Devine (many of our customers will remember Mike well). Geoff and Mike formed their business partnership in 1989.

From this point onwards the company began to specialize in the Audi-VW marque, forming their own VW-backed race team in 1990. Mike went on to win many a championship with AmD-built and tuned Golfs, which is why the company 'know their stuff' when it comes to engine and suspension tuning and remapping. This hands-on knowledge combined with a commitment to rigorous staff training and financial investment in technology, are why AmD are so highly regarded in the industry. It may also be why we are still going strong today, when many other engine tuners have been formed and have fallen by the wayside.

In 2007 AmD Technik was taken over by a consortium comprising of Essex based VAG specialist Big Boys Toys (BBT) and Surrey tuning experts Mega4. Both of these companies have huge experience in the VAG performance tuning market and see a bright future for AmD Technik.

Shaun Hollamby, BBTs' Managing Director who has a VAG motorsport background which goes back over 30 years including championship wins in the VW Cup in 2006, said, "The opportunity to expand our business by merging with AmD Technik is a hugely exciting proposition. For many years I have been a great fan of AmDs' technical expertise and look forward to the challenge ahead."

Joint partner in this venture is Surrey-based tuning specialist Mega4. Simon Howarth from Mega4 and new Managing Director of AmD Technik said, "As with any new business coalition there will be alot of hardwork to realise the potential but the experience and product knowledge of those people involved will ensure that AmD Technik has a bright and successful future."

AmD Technik have now expanded with tuning and service centres in West Thurrock, Essex and Woking, Surrey.
